The Virgin Mary in Britain and Ireland, York St John University
Thursday June 26th – Saturday June 28th 2014
We are interested in receiving proposals from those who have published academic material or are engaged in current research in this area. The work must focus on devotion, belief and attitudes to the Virgin Mary in Britain and Ireland.
Call for Papers
Proposals are invited for papers on the cult of the Virgin Mary in Britain and Ireland, in the following areas:
Anthropological perspectives (e.g. pilgrimage, devotions, shrines; indigenous or diaspora communities and their expressions of devotion)
Religious Studies (devotion to Mary expressed in different faith traditions: e.g. Muslim; Catholic; Orthodox; other churches; new spiritualities)
Historical approaches (e.g. medieval; Reformation; 19th century Catholic restoration/Anglo-Catholic movement; 20th century pre- and post-Vatican II)
Sociological approaches (aspects of the cult of the Virgin Mary as they relate to British and Irish society, e.g. ‘New Age’ expressions)
Theological analyses (theology relating to Mary by authors who came from, or worked in, Britain and Ireland, e.g. Eadmer, Duns Scotus, Newman)
Feminist analyses (the work of British or Irish feminists; Mary related to gender/movements for equal opportunities)
Literature or media-based studies (e.g. Mary in fiction, poetry or film)
